Most natural materials can be used as a hearth including marbles, granites and limestones. There are many to choose from, and all have their own beauty and character.
Black or dark grey is still the most popular choice for a fire hearth for those with a working log burner or open fire and we stock Italian Black Honed Slate and Honed Nero Granite in both 20mm and 30mm thicknesses. We can work with your template or measurements to create your individual hearth in as little as 7 days.
Usually created in a dark material a dark hearth is not just traditional - in the right setting the simplicity of material such are Nero Granite can help create a striking and modern look. Sometimes included without a fire to create a modern and natural focal point to a room.
Many are opting for a pared back look and choosing to have a mantel above the fire opening without any surrounds. This look is simplicity itself and is fantastic in modern and character properties alike.
Working in limestone block we can create a 'floating' mantel by hand, with or without corbels. Not only does the mantel help to bring proportion to the fire opening, it can also protect items hung above the fire such as TV's.
Many do not have or are not able to create a large fire chamber opening but all is not lost. Using inserts the visible wall between the chamber opening and the inner edge of the fire surround can be hidden.
More recently it has become popular to reinstate hearths even when there will not be a working fire. This type of project presents a fantastic opportunity to explore the many different materials available. Marbles can give a modern, geometric feel whilst the naturally occurring fossil content of Jura Blue and Beige limestones create an organic, natural look.
